11/27 and 11/28 - POST THANKGSIVING GUIDED WALKS THROUGH SEWARD PARK
Walks led by an Audubon Naturalist will leave the Center at 10AM and 2PM on Friday and Saturday, November 27th & 28th. Amongst the scenery of the magnificent old growth forest and our beautiful Lake Washington, Audubon staff will make nature come alive and calories melt away. "Think of it as a carbon and calorie offset opportunity. Instead of spending the day in your car fighting Black Friday traffic you can spend a few hours with your friends and family walking off calories and enjoying the bounty of nature here at Seward Park. We even estimate that you can burn upwards of 200-300 calories on the walks," said Audubon Education Director Annie Morton. In addition to being a healthy alternative for you and the environment, the Giving Thanks to Nature Guided Walks are great opportunities to learn about why the trees, animals, and inhabitants of Seward Park are all things for which we should be thankful. Participants will explore the flora and fauna as skilled naturalists teach about everything from salmon to salamanders, and mountain beavers to mahonias. So, this Thanksgiving, as you count the many things that you are thankful for, don’t forget about nature.Giving Thanks to Nature guided walks will leave from the Seward Park Audubon Center at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The easy-moderate walks will last approximately 1.5 hours and are about 2 miles long. Walks will be conducted regardless of weather conditions unless deemed unsafe.Space on the walks is limited. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made by telephoning the Seward Park Audubon Center at 206-652-2444 or email jmanson@audubon.org. The cost is $2-4 per person. Participants are encouraged to bring the family, comfortable clothing for the weather, and a sense of adventure and wonder!

Forty-two years after Private First Class Micky Santa inscribed his name and address onto the bottom of the canvas bed inches above his head aboard the USNS General Nelson M. Walker, Santa will once again see his message. Opening Sept. 17 at the Washington State History Museum, is Marking Time: Voyage to Vietnam. View an original sleeping station salvaged from the Walker, graffitied with the thoughts of young Americans traveling to the Vietnam War. The names of soldiers and marines, and their hometowns; wives and girlfriends; poetry; drawings; patriotic sentiments; political statements and more cover these canvas beds preserved by the Vietnam Graffiti Project and Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, organizers of the exhibit. http://www.washingtonhistory.org
