A few months back, I went to everyone's official website and got on their mailing lists. The outcome: Lots of emails!
Barack Obama always starts off with an informal salutation:
Lee --
Both Hillary and Bill Clinton write to me on an almost every-other-day basis and start off with:
Dear Lee,
Bill usually starts with some good imagery:
Did you feel the race shift? Those last few days before Hillary's big wins, could you feel the difference? The crowds, the energy, the momentum of the whole race seemed to be shifting in Hillary's direction.
That was you.
Barack wrote some juicy stuff just a few days back:
Over the weekend, an aide to Senator Clinton attempted to diminish the overwhelming number of contests we've won by referring to places we've prevailed as "boutique" states and our supporters as the "latte-sipping crowd." I'm not sure how those terms apply to Mississippi and Wyoming -- or Virginia, Iowa, Louisiana, or Idaho for that matter. I know that our victories in all of these states demonstrate a rejection of this kind of petty, divisive campaigning.
Both the Clintons and Obama ask for money each time:
Contribute now to give Hillary another $3 million day.
Please make a donation of $25 today: https://donate.barackobama.com/math
That's cool, you must have the funds to run. Barak added this while asking for dough:
And unlike Senator Clinton and Senator McCain, we have never taken money from lobbyists or PACs.
Hillary laid it out frankly, and with urgency:
Against all the odds, facing an opponent with more momentum and twice as many ads on the air, you kept working, giving, and believing. And that hard work is going to put us in the White House. Contribute now to help us reach $3 million in 24 hours.
John McCain is another story. First, he doesn't write personal notes like Bill, Hillary and Barack. Just an update from somebody else in the campaign. A sample:
The McCain Update - March 7, 2008
With the wins in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont, John McCain officially became the Republican nominee on March 4th. He now has over 1,191 delegates.
No one says hello or goodbye.
Mike Huckabee was actually quite sweet, but still no greeting:
It seems as if winter is chasing me wherever I go! It's snowing hard in Little Rock today--in March, for heaven's sake!
Then Mike quit the campaign and let me know what he and his wife are up to:
Janet and I will be in our own church for the first time in a long time and that will be great.
Another thing going for Mike, he knows how to say goodbye at the end of a letter.
God bless you all!
With deep love for all,
Mike Huckabee
Here's Bill's sign-off:
Sincerely,
Bill Clinton
Barack is informal again:
Thank you for your support,
Barack
And, Hillary is very professional:
Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton
As for me,
Peace out!
