Theater in West Seattle
Now through 2/21
ArtsWest - 4711 California Ave. SW
Seattle Premiere! LOVE SONG by John Kolvenbach Directed by Kate Witt Featuring Cindy Bradder, Nick DeSantis, Heather Hawkins, and Christopher Zinovitch Wed-Sat 7:30; Sun 3:00 Oddball Beane is a modern day hermit, avoiding everyone but his career-focused sister and her cynical husband. His life is a shrinking, darkening world, until the night a beautiful thief breaks into his apartment. Suddenly all of the love songs make sense. His blissful transformation baffles his sister Joan, who finds her own marriage transfigured even as she tries to unravel the story behind Molly, Beane's mysterious new love. Funny, enchanting and tender, this off-beat romantic comedy is the latest from a hot young playwright whose work has been produced from New York to London's West End. . Recommended for ages 15 and older.. "One of the best new plays of the year. Richly comic and deeply touching. Outstanding. A smashing, compassionate new play." - Daily Telegraph (London). For tickets, call (206) 938-0339 or visit www.artswest.org.

Book Signing Dr. Lorraine McConaghy
2/11 - 7pm
Log House Museum 3003-61st Ave. SW
Dr. Lorraine McConaghy, public historian at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, will talk at the Log House Museum on Thursday, February 11 at 7 p.m. from her new book: Warship under Sail, The USS Decatur in the Pacific West, published by the University of Washington Press. According to Professor John M. Findlay of the University of Washington, McConaghy examines anew the founding of Seattle in this book. The Decatur "participated in the iconic 'Battle of Seattle,' that day-long skirmish during January 1856 between 'Natives' and 'non-Natives' that looms so large in historical accounts of the city." Warship under Sail focuses on four episodes in the Decatur's Pacific Squadron mission: the harrowing journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through the Strait of Magellan; a Seattle war story that contested American treaties and settlements; participation with other squadron ships on a U.S. State Department mission to Nicaragua; and more than a year spent anchored off Panama as a hospital ship. In a period of five years, more than 300 men lived aboard ship, leaving a rich record of logbooks, medical and punishment records, correspondence, personal journals, and drawings. Admission is free.
